How to Find Human-Written Books
Stories have always been a conversation between people, shaped by lived experience, emotion, memory, imagination, and choice. As publishing evolves, many readers are asking a simple question:
How do I find books written by humans?
Indie Book Scene exists to help readers discover authentic, human-crafted stories, especially from self-published and small press authors who are creating boldly, independently, and with intention.
Why Human-Written Books Matter
Human-written books carry something algorithms can’t replicate: personal voice, emotional risk, creative imperfection, and perspective shaped by real experience.
Whether it’s fantasy, romance, horror, or literary fiction, readers often feel the difference, even if they can’t always articulate why.
Choosing human-written books helps:
- Support real authors and creative livelihoods
- Preserve diverse voices and storytelling styles
- Encourage originality over formula
- Build trust between readers and creators
The Challenge: Discoverability
Many online storefronts do not distinguish between human-written and AI-generated content. This can make it harder for readers to confidently find books created primarily by human authors — especially in crowded genres.
That’s where Indie Book Scene comes in.

What “Human-Written” Means at Indie Book Scene
A human-written book is one that reflects meaningful human authorship, where the creative direction, voice, storytelling, and revision decisions were made by a person.
Some authors may use tools for spelling, grammar, or brainstorming. That alone does not disqualify a book. What matters is that the story itself was crafted through human creativity, intention, and revision.
Books that are written entirely or primarily by automated systems without meaningful human authorship are not eligible for certification or awards consideration.
